Had my bi-annual hang out with my hip babe, Alyssa, today. Man, so many memories with this chick. I've been friends with her since 8th grade and we have the best of adventures. I remember how we used  to get in trouble back in middle school because Souplantation had this thing where they allowed customers to fill brown bags with baked goodies, but apparently you weren't allowed to fill the bag to the very brim, which we did. The manager saw us stuffing our bags with brownies and muffins and bread and I think we almost got banned from the restaurant, hahaha. Good times. Besides being restaurant hooligans, we used to run around at midnight playing hide and seek with the boys in Michelle's neighborhood (#hoodkids4lyfe), fill pools with bubbles and then jump and swim in the bubbly mess, make boys take photos in Jason's Ralph Lauren shirt (don't ask), eat lots n lots of froyo, sing at the top of our lungs whilst spinning under the stars, and bum at the beach. We have the kinda friendship where we can go months without seeing each other, but when we meet up, it's like we just saw each other yesterday. Since I go to school halfway across the country, we can only meet up during breaks. Thus, it's become tradition to meet up during winter and summer break to chill at the beach and eat at Souplantation.

I truly believe the best place to talk is at a California beach. Something about the salt sea air, the sand, the roaring waves, the gentle sunshine. Call me a Romantic, but I believe in the sublime healing powers of nature. And the beach never fails to have an amazing calming effect on me. Anyways, I'm the type of person that likes to truly connect with people. I absolutely hate small talk, especially with my best friends. Therefore, we launched into deep conversations about everything: the people in our lives, goals, dreams, fears, life stuff. Then, we snapped some photos because Alyssa has such great style. Thus it was absolutely mandatory that I feature her effortlessly cool look on my blog. My camera died some time before sunset, so I ended up snapping the rest of the photos with my phone, but that was fine.

All in all, it was grand day and nothing is more beautiful than a California sunset.

Moral of the Day: Life's short mang, so get off your computers and phones to take the time to absorb the world around you. Get in the car with your best friends and drive and drive and drive. Meet new people and learn about their souls. See everything lovely and unusual between the cracks. Watch a million sunrises and sunsets and don't be afraid to let someone in. And when you find yourself stuck at a maddening almost,  have the courage to walk away. I promise you'll find another. Just believe.

P.S. I'm reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac again and I absolutely love this quote:

“Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together; sophistication demands that they submit to sex immediately without proper preliminary talk. Not courting talk — real straight talk about souls, for life is holy and every moment is precious.”

Guys, it's all about the real straight talk about souls. Don't settle for anything less. Life's too precious for facades and half connections.
