The Look: I remember talking about my sweatshirt with Topshop Creative Director, Kate Phelan. I wore it on the second day of Teen Vogue Fashion University and she chortled when she saw it and asked me why I chose to wear it. I explained that since style reflects the sentiments of the wearer, when I rep my sweatshirt the word "bitch" loses its common denotation of profanity and becomes a meaningless bunch of letters. This occurs because I believe that words only contain the meaning the individual attaches to them. Words are infinite in the sense that we, human beings, have the power to assign any meaning to an assembly of letters. In the same way that contemporary society changed the definition of "bitch" from "female dog" to an expletive, I can change it from a swear word to nothing at all. Bitch, then, becomes just as meaningless as erfth. Perhaps it's my poetic sensibilities influencing me, but I am enchanted by this notion of assigning meaning to and stripping meaning from words. Hyped. Mer. Featherbones. By opening one's mind and creating new words, the speaker or the writer can use the new words to express a feeling or atmosphere when old words fail. (*Kate Phelan agreed with my thoughts and asked me to write poems for Topshop!*)
That being said, it's undeniable that "bitch" emits an electric shock, which is probably why Urban Outfitters created this sweater. Because there is this outrageousness attached to my sweatshirt, I decided to pile kooky on crazy to create a wild, chaotic ensemble. Thus, I paired the sweatshirt with my holographic skirt and added skeleton tights, platform boots, and a faux fur coat. Since the individual pieces of my outfit were so loud, I chose to keep it from exploding into a wardrobe malfunction by maintaing a neutral palette throughout. For a "small" pop of color, I sported a blue lip. Ha. What can I say? In terms of style, I'm a maximalist with an affinity for the unorthodox. That being said, I was pretty happy with this look. In fact, I would love to wear blue lipstick more often, but the lip tar from Sephora was so difficult to work with! It got on my hands and stained my teeth aka ain't nobody got time for that. It's a shame, though, because I really liked how it looked on me. What are y'all's thoughts on blue lips?
The Life: Nothing too exciting going on in my life right now. Just busy with school, work, internships, extracurriculars blah blah blah whilst trying to maintain a semblance of a social life. I did recently bump into this super cool photography grad student, which is unfortunate for my morning routine. I have a photography class at 8 in the morning, and I usually look super ratchet in that class. I go sans makeup in my workout clothes because I take the couple hours between that class and work and/or my marketing class to go on a run. Now I'm scared I'm going to bump into cool photography grad student in my derp state, so this fear is motivating me to dress well and look more presentable....
