I've been searching for the perfect white button-down for years. For a long time, I've had a clear image of what I've wanted-- rummaging through malls, boutiques, thrift shops, and the Internet for my dream top only to leave empty-handed. As a perfectionist, I refused to settle for anything less than everything on my perfect-white-button-down check list.
1) It couldn't be embarrassingly see-through. (I have far too many transparent tops and a white see-through top is a tad tacky.)
2) It needed to be a slouchy fit.
3) Wide, rolled-up sleeves.
4) Deep v-neck.
You know, that I-just-rolled-out-bed-and-threw-this-shirt-on-but-look-how-effortlessly-cool-I-look kinda top. For some reason, they seemed to be in limited supply. So I was condemned to years of foraging futilely whilst salivating over the white designer button-downs worn by the likes of Eva Chen and random fashion bloggers on Instagram. Yeah, I even lurked the #whitebuttondown on Insta, but they were always too expensive. I'm talking $200-$500 range. Yeahhhh, no. Definitely do not have that kinda money to spend on a single article of clothing. Even if it is the perfect white button-down.
Well after a pretty much lifelong quest, I finally found it. I was sifting through a random rack in a thrift store and stumbled upon it without even trying to look for it. Isn't that just the epitome of life? Or maybe it's just the epitome of my sitcom life. Anyways, I tried it on and fell in love. And the best part of it all was the price. Only 12 dollars! I'm sure all you thrifting pros are shaking your heads and thinking I could have gotten it for $5, but I've seriously been searching for this baby for many, many years so let me just live happily-ever-after with my white button-down in blissful ignorance.
Now that that background story has been written (in a rather garrulous manner), this button-down is pretty much my top for the summer. I'll probably wear it too much, but whatever. It's been a long time coming. The above photos were snapped on Father's Day. Since it was a semi-formal occasion, I paired the top with some jeans for a classic, casual base. Then, to dress the ensemble up a bit, I added my boater hat and a pair of spiked heels. For accessories, I went with my usual vintage watch and dash of rings.
On the life side of things, I recently watched The Fault in Our Stars and cried like a baby. Although I am a fan of the movie, I must admit, Augustus Waters's bossiness was a tad disconcerting. He was always calling the shots, and he never really asked Hazel Grace to come over to his house. His requests, at least to me, always seemed like commands, rather than questions. He'd always be like 'Come over', hang up, and she'd show up. I guess his assertiveness was part of his charm, and it didn't really bug me that much because he meant well I think, but still. Anyways, even with the slightly bothersome patriarchal component, the movie still made me weep uncontrollably. Well-dipped in the pathos of star-crossed lovers and the cruelty of not-enough-time, it was hard to keep my heart from breaking. When Hazel Grace said, "But Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity." I bawled. And the ending. The ending. When Gus says, "You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world....but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes her's." Followed by Hazel Grace's, "I do, Augustus, I do." Oh. My. Gahd. I just couldn't stop crying and crying and crying. Life is unfair and I am a hopeless romantic so this movie made me an emotional mess, but not as much of an emotional mess as when I read the book the first time around. I cried about Augustus for weeks. #emotionalmess (Ronnie thinks TFIOS is basic so he is probably rolling his eyes right now.)
Ok, ok I'll stop blabbering about sad fictional stories. Onto semi-sad music:
1) Brooklyn Baby by Lana Del Rey
2) Not About Angels by Birdy
Have a fabulous rest of the week, everybody! I've started working for a bank as their marketing person for the summer, so I'll be pretty busy Monday through Friday as I'm working full time. Wish me luck! The finance world is a bit foreign to me, but I'm all about expanding my knowledge.
Yeah, I'm a nerd.
'Til next week, dahlings!
xx
