Man Repeller

Turtleneck: Zara
Trousers: Zara
Shoes: Target

I'm never not in a turtleneck these days and this one's my favorite. Its blend of classic stripes with playful patches perfectly captures my new sartorial aesthetic. I decided to team this top with these mustard yellow, wide-leg trousers for an extra pop of color and '70s feel. Then, I tucked my hair in to give turtleneck hair a go. Felt v Man Repeller in this getup aka style goals achieved for the day woop woop!

On the cultural side of things, my dear friend Davina Catt aka the UK editor of Interview Magazine slash Vogue writer slash filmmaker slash all-around creative girl boss is speaking to leading actress Olga Kurylenko about working with director Terrence Malick and other cinematic glories. If you're in London and enjoy arty, soul-feeding experiences, I recommend popping into the V&A on February 12. The event takes places in The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre and starts at 6:30 PM. Tickets are 10 pounds. For more info, click here

If you go, take pictures but don't tag me on Instagram because I will bitterly bawl over the fact that you're in London doing ultra-cool London things and I'm not. Sigh, distance makes the heartbreak stronger. I'll be back one day. Oki bye I'm gonna watch the new Pretty Little Liars episode now because it's a Saturday night, baby, and I'm alive. (Also it's my guilty pleasure. I know.)

Garden State

Shirt: Homesick Clothing Co
Choker: Clothes Show Live
Creepers: Primark

I've wanted a T-shirt dress for a long time, so I was super stoked when this shirt from Homesick Clothing Co turned out to be T-shirt dress length. To keep things minimal, I chose to style the shirt with a pair of creepers and a choker necklace. Then, I tied my hair in a topknot for some uptown funk.

As for the story behind this shirt, it's a long one. I'll try to give you the SparksNotes version.

As a young teenager, I watched Garden State and this quote explained all the feelings I couldn't explain myself:

"You know that point in your life when you realize the house you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of a sudden even though you have some place where you put your shit, that idea of home is gone. It's like you feel homesick for a place that doesn't even exist. Maybe it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't ever have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it's like a cycle or something. I don't know, but I miss the idea of it, you know. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people that miss the same imaginary place."

Growing up, I always felt homesick. I was happy in my hometown, but nothing ever truly felt like home. Something was missing, and it was tangible but it also wasn't tangible because I couldn't grasp what was missing.

Then. Then, I studied abroad in London second semester of my junior year in college and all the puzzle pieces fell together in the most cliche of ways. Everything clicked. I finally felt like I was exactly where I should be. I finally felt at home.

In London, I found myself. I gained the courage to chase the dreams that scared me. I grew in every possible way: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and even physically because I felt taller (ha). I felt like the city had all the answers to all my questions, so I flew back after college to spend a few months with Conde Nast. And it was even better the second time around! I collaborated with Vogue editors, worked on magazine layout for GQ magazine, and even got to cover the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. It was all so surreal and nothing has felt like home since.

Now that I'm back in Southern California, I'm still homesick for London because I feel like that city is the catalyst to my personal growth (and I mean, duh, it's inarguably the best place in the entire world). Every time I see a photo of London on Instagram, I start weeping uncontrollably and then I tag my best friend so we can weep together. But, in all seriousness, I've also learned that even if a place doesn't feel like home, it doesn't mean you can't grow and it doesn't mean you can't be happy.

What I love about Homesick Clothing Co is how it evokes this beautiful, sad nostalgia, but it also encourages you to keep the nostalgia from paralyzing your present. In my TOOVIA magazine interview with Homesick's creator, she says:

"Homesick ruts are sneaky. I need to remind myself of my own advice frequently. I believe that being stuck in the past or missing a place where you used to be is a common state of mind. However, happiness is determined by how you react to the nostalgia. A moment can never be recreated exactly how it was. It’s okay to feel sad about a cherished memory being over, but if you dwell there for too long, you can’t move forward. Instead, you can embrace the warmth this feeling once gave you, and you can use it as inspiration for creating new memories that will bring you joy."

And I think that's incredibly important. I don't know if I'll ever find a place as good as London. But Southern California has its own perks. Yesterday, I sat on the La Jolla cliffs at sunset, sharing chips and guac with good friends and it felt like home.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2014

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was all about transport. And no, not in the tube-at-rush-hour-please-get-me-out-of-here-why-are-these-people-so-close-to-me kind of way. Think, instead, Aladdin’s magic carpet. Cheesy, I know, but this show, like Disney’s most famous rug, took its audience on a journey through ethereal worlds of enchantment and wonder. From a starry cosmos of golden wings and glitter to a cheeky sleepover full of tulle and frills that spilled into a galactic space-meets-sport dance party, which then spun around and dove into a dreamy woodland fairy tale, and closed with a black moon masquerade ball. A mouthful to say and a whirlwind to experience, the 2014 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show certainly took spectators on a ride of a lifetime.

The show opened in a dazzle of bright lights and high-energy beats-- building up the room’s palpable enthusiasm into explosive proportions. When the first Angel appeared, everyone erupted in a thunder of hoots and hollers and snapping smartphones. With camera phone flashes going off left and right, the models lived for the applause (applause, applause) and did not hold back on the glamour. Decked out in shimmery drapes and gigantic golden wings, they strutted down the catwalk in all their perfectly toned, symmetrical-faced glory.

And just as the audience started swimming comfortably in the lively atmosphere, the show astonished and brought everyone into calmer waters. The lights dimmed and UK darling, Ed Sheeran, walked out into the spotlight. As the crowd grew silent in anticipation, the multi-genre musician began singing his heart-melting, “Thinking Out Loud”, as Angels floated past him in glittering jewels and cascading capes. It was impossible not to get immersed in the moody, celestial atmosphere with Ed Sheeran softly crooning, “Cause honey, your soul could never grow old, it’s evergreen. And, baby, your smile’s forever in my mind and memory”, whilst models twirled past him like traveling stars along a charcoal sky.

Once Ed hummed his last note, the show woke the audience up out of its starry-eyed reverie and into one of Taylor Swift’s exclusive slumber parties-- giving everyone a taste of what it’s like to be T Swift’s best friend. Dressed in a floor-length nightgown, Taylor stomped around the catwalk and launched into her catchy new song, "Blank Space", as Angels jumped on plush couches and bounced along the stage in frilly robes and tulle sleepwear.

Piggybacking on the excitement of a girls night in, Ariana Grande followed in full fanfare-- taking over the stage with a crew of ultramodern dancers and turning the slumber party into a dance party. The young popstar is shockingly tiny in real life, but has an equally surprising BIG voice. And she certainly showed it off by belting out impressive versions of “Bang Bang” and “Break Free” as Angels bopped around her in hot pink track jackets and thigh-high boots.

With all the adrenaline in the air from back-to-back dynamic performances, the VS show ricocheted back to a quieter ambience, replacing neon lights with white paper trees and plopping everyone into an enchanted forest of mystical faeries and Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”. As reverential symphonies collided with Hozier’s soulful drawl, VS models fluttered around the violet haze in tinsel foliage and trailing ruffle skirts.

And just when I thought the VS Show was going to end with a Marc Jacobs SS15 whisper, out marched a horde of masked Angels in all-black garb followed by none other than the show’s headliner, T Swizzle, to end it all in a bang. With a slew of dark Angels in her wake, Taylor commanded the runway with the very appropriate, “Style”-- reflecting the “James Dean daydream look” in everyone’s eyes.

Then some intriguing mix of contemporary and interpretive dance shadowed Taylor’s act, silencing the crowd for the Angels’ final appearance.

And what an exit it was! Black and white balloons fell from the ceiling, "Victoria’s Secret" flashed in large letters on the widescreen, and all the models flooded the stage, jumping and waving, whilst LED confetti lit up the room.

As abnormally large black balloons continued to hit everyone on the head and people scrambled to get the best photo of all the models on the catwalk, it was obvious that this event was a night that no one would ever forget (because photos uploaded onto social media are permanent).

And, if some people managed to make it through the night without snapping a single photo for Instagram, then everyone definitely left believing in the magic of Angels, even if they didn’t get picture-proof.

1989

Jumper: Target
Culottes: Miss Selfridge
Socks: Miss Selfridge
Oxfords: Urban Outfitters

Comfort is one of my priorities when it comes to fashion. I think it's imperative to feel comfortable in your clothes because you end up looking like an awkward claustrophobic otherwise. That being said, I have a weakness for snuggly oversized jumpers and voluminous pants (think The Row). And I was pretty proud of this look since I managed to pair oversized on oversized without looking like a potato sack wreck. So I snapped this photo in one of the bathrooms in Conde Nast like the shameless social media obsessed millennial I am.

On the subject of fashion & style, this week has been a clothes-filled week. From lurking at the whimsical garb in Dover Street Market to going a little crazy at the private, invitation-only Sandro sample sale (up to 70% off on designer dresses/tops/skirts/jumpers/bags/etc!) to marveling at the cooly-clad humans at the YearOne Collective pop-up party in hip-tastic Hackney.

Check it all out below!

1989 (Full Album) by Taylor Swift

**I finally found a crisp version of the album on YouTube! And I'm listening to it right now and, man, is it cathartic. I'm not gonna lie (Sorry Ronnie. Sorry God.), I totally dig this sound. Don't be like me and buy the album cuz these songs are addicting and the lyrics are ON POINT.**

P.S. Thanks River Island & 5 inch and up for sending me these gorgeous ankle boot heels! Gonna wear these babies to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which is in TWO DAYS!!! Ahhhh, hashtag stoked.

Stars for Great Wars Like Ours

Beanie: Urban Outfitters
Scarf: Urban Outfitters
Denim Jacket: Forever 21
Sweater: Zara
Leggings: Charlotte Russe
Combat Boots: Charlotte Russe

This photo was snapped on the day the tube broke down whilst I was on my way to Shoreditch. Stranded in the middle of nowhere as a result, I sat on a rando street curb and looked like a forlorn mushroom child for posterity. And isn't that just a metaphor for life? You make plans and something you didn't anticipate, something you couldn't anticipate, something completely out of your hands, happens. You get on a train and it breaks down. (You lose that one person you thought you could never, ever live without.) And in the aftermath of the unanticipated disaster, you're left stranded in the middle of nowhere feeling completely and utterly lost. Feeling like you can't go forward. Because how can you move forward when your main mode of transportation (read: the tube) ceases to function? And now you're probably the one lost. Am I talking in literal terms or metaphorical terms? I'll answer that for you. Both. These unpredictable (horrible, heartbreaking) moments are also painful, but beneficial determinants of character. This is when you discover whether you're strong enough to move forward. This is when you must find your way back no matter how futile the situation seems. This is when I sat on a curb in the middle of nowhere and waited for a (very slow) bus to transport me to Shoreditch. And that's the moral of this photo right here. In life, shit will happen. Shit that will completely tear you apart and break you. But finding a way out of the shit is what builds character. It's what helps you survive the next shit occurrence. And they say it gets better. Or, according to i-D Features Editor Bertie Brandes, you grow apathetic and cynical. I'd like to believe the former, even if it's only for the sake of my still starry-eyed teenage soul (but sometimes that's what you need to do, I think). To be honest, I'm too young to really know the answer. But I hopped on a bus and got to Shoreditch, didn't I?

On that note, here's a photodiary of my most recent misadventures.

Maybe this could be the kind of one
Where I sit on the words
Or talking through each style
Everything is overheard
See everything I take upon loses worth
Well now that you're not the one that I thought you were
And it hurts that I'm done

Now I don't believe in nothing

Avoiding night, tell me you know

Maybe I could be this lonely guy

That'll sing on a song
Another tease will come along
With everything I don't want
And you won't see me
Or pass with another one

I, I cannot dream this is enough when you're gone

Only to stomach a night without eating at all
Everyone's coming but now this will all be yours
Breathe, this is love without love without love without love without love without love
Breathe, this is love without love without love without love without love without love
Breathe, this is love without love without love without love without love without love
Breathe, this is love without love without love without love without love without love

Love, what've you done with my tongue?

I open my mouth but you hear me wrong
Love, what've you done with my tongue?
I open my mouth but you steer me wrong

I'm walking through each smile

Everything is overturned
See everything that dies
It takes a small piece to rust
Well now the stones been thrown
The trust is dust
